Karwar is a city in the South Indian state of Karnataka, under the administration of Uttar Kannada district. Karwar lies on the west coast of Southern India at the mouth of the Kali river. Its geography creates a natural harbour with protection against monsoon weather. Being a port town, Karwara is a centre for agriculture, some manufacturing and tourism and also project seabird a huge naval base.
The name Karwar itself is a misnomer. It was originally “Kadwad” and one theory is the British mispronounced the “d” and replaced it with an “r”. Karwar is a seaside city on the west coast of the Indian peninsula. To the east are the Western Ghats. Karwar is situated on the banks of the Kali river (Kali nadi) which flows west to the Arabian sea from its headwaters at Bidi village in the Western Ghats. The Kali river has a length of about 153 km and is the main source of irrigation for Karnataka. Karwar is 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south of the Karnataka – Goa border and 519 kilometres (322 mi) north-west of Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka. Baitkhol port at Karwar is a natural harbour with land side hills and ocean side islands protecting it from cyclonic weather.
PLACES TO VISIT IN KARWAR
1. KURUMGAD ISLAND:- A near 4km boat-ride from Sadashiv jetty on the backwaters of River Kali at Karwar will bring you to this amazing tortoise-shaped island which has a host of activities in store for you. The attractions of prime importance in the island are the Narasimha Temple and the Kurumgad Beach which unarguably bring-in a huge crowd of tourists and devotees. Loads of fun-filled activities keep tourists thrilled till the end. From trekking, fishing, boat-rides, tidal pool to diving, snorkeling or treasure-hunts, there in no dearth to entertainment options while in this wonderful island. MAJALI BEACH :- Located in Karwar, Majali Beach is one of the fantastic places to visit in Karwar and is prominent for its sea facing resorts and cottages and is amid the popular destinations for tourists. The Beach is situated at a distance of 12 Kms from Karwar Railway Station. A wonderful lake set nearby Majali Beach presents startling activities like kayaking, rowing and fishing.
3. SADASHIVGAD FORT :- Made on a 200 ft high hill-top, this Fort is located at a distance of 5 Kms to the north of Karwar. It is famous for Goddess Durga Temple and was founded in 1698 by Raja Sonde. The peak of Sadashivgad Fort offers a panoramic view of the complete village together with the Kali River and the bridge situated near the fort.
4.WARSHIP MUESUM:- This place is located on Karwar beach. After entering in karwar city you can find this place on main road. You have to pay Rs 15 Entry fee. After entering in the ship documentary on Indian Navy will be shown to you in small ship room. Then you can see entire ship from inside. 5.RABINDRANATH TAGORE BEACH:- Rabindranath Tagore beach in Karwar is one of the best beach for witnessing a beautiful sunset. Every year, a festival called Karavali Utsav is held on Rabindranath Tagore Beach, lasting for 3 to 4 days. It is organized by the Uttara Kannada District Administration as a cultural-social festival. Many shops and stalls are installed at the Rabindranath Tagore Beach. People from all parts of the district and from all over the state and neighboring Goa state participate. Many cultural events are held in the evening in which regional, national and international artists present shows; they include Bollywood stars, Kannada film stars, Goan artists and local artists. The beach also has a park where children can enjoying playing games.
